Seward Park Urban Renewal Area
Two Bridges Neighborhood Council has joined with GOLES (Good Old Lower East Side), Pratt Institute, and other local community organizations to plan and advocate for SPURA (The Seward Park Urban Renewal Area).
This large area south of the Williamsburg Bridge was home to thousands of low-income tenants until it was razed by New York City in the 1960s.
Forty years later, despite the City's ambitious plans, the area remains undeveloped. Its most recognizable landmark is a huge open-air parking lot.
The SPURA coalition is focusing on productive residential, commercial, and recreational uses for the area, which has excellent access to transportation and is surrounded by thriving diverse communities.
