Marco Polo Day Celebration — October 18, 2009

Two Bridges, together with new and old friends from both Little Italy and Chinatown, celebrated the official listing of these two communities on the New York State Register of Historic Places. The festivities, which featured unforgettable cultural performances highlighting the Chinese and Italian cultures, were joined by Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer, NYC Comptroller-elect John Liu and City Councilmember-elect Margaret Chin.

The Lower East Side — An Endangered Place

Two Bridges Neighborhood Council has completed a film called The Lower East Side: An Endangered Place. Through interviews with a broad spectrum of Lower East residents, this new documentary explores the impact of gentrification on their lives. The filmmakers interviewed long-term residents and new arrivals, people on all sides of the complex and controversial issue of gentrification. The film is intended to spark a dialogue — and eventually a campaign — to preserve the diversity, vitality, and unique culture of the Lower East Side. Read more...

New screening of the film will take place on March 31 at the offices of University Settlement in the Lower East Side.
